(un)bound

(un)bound works with vintage household magazines and occasional vintage erotic material. The women in these pages modeled clothing, desire and household goods, selling dreams of aspiration. Bound into the magazine and into an expectation, domestic, erotic or demure, each is fixed in place. Van Gool takes them out of this fixed context, makes a single straight cut and joins the subjects to an altogether different scene. Nearly aligned, the works, which read like postcards from another place, not only seduce but also disrupt their original premise, leaving the viewer with their own imagination.
